The nation of barbarians: how to explain the bloodiness of Russian soldiers?

Recently the pictures of tortured and murdered civilians from the towns of Irpin, Bucha, Vorzel, Borodyanka and other cushioned towns of Kyiv suburbs dazed the whole the world. The world shuddered at the ferocity with which the Russian butchers came to the Ukrainian free land. Yes, truly butchers, because there have been found the premises and cellars where Russian ‘liberators’ carried out tortures and executions of innocent people, and mass graves nearby.  One may say this is reminiscent of Babyn Yar massacre... But, by no means justifying the butchers of that time, it was done through the lens of a particular sick ideology against the Jews. And what is the ideology here and now? Pure horrification of the population, or coercion to accept the superiority of weapon over the innocent, the power over the weak?

What the world has seen in these photos and videos is only the tip of the iceberg, as the scale of massacres in the city of Mariupol in Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Sumy and Chernihiv regions, and in the temporarily occupied territories of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions has not yet been fully assessed.

The question arises: how, why, for what purpose is there such bloodshed and sadism? And, is it really a new phenomenon?

It seems that purposeful genocide of the Ukrainian people can be explained by the 20-year rule of a tyrant in the Russian Federation and the increasing hatred towards the Ukrainian nation, which led to a total self-conviction of Russians, that Ukraine has no right to exist, that it is ‘moral and sacred obligation’ for Russian to ‘liberate’ Ukraine from some kind of imaginary evil. But in reality, the negative biases to all Ukrainian have been shaped by Moscow over the centuries.

It generally known how difficult it was for Ukraine to achieve its independence. During the reign of the Russian Empire and Bolsheviki, due to the Dekulakization and Holodomor (terror-famine) as a means of rooting out the unsuitable to the communist totalitarian power Ukrainians, everything was done to erase the Ukrainian identity and love of freedom. This is very similar to the blockade of Mariupol in 2022: the destruction of the gas and water supply system, the continuous bombing, the detention of hundreds of thousands of civilians, forced to stay in cold basements without light or food, and the systematic intentional missile shelling of food storehouses.

The Russian rulers have always been afraid of the Ukrainians, and they never considered Ukrainians as so-called brothers, because Ukrainians mentally bear European values. According to Russian and Soviet writer Aleksei Tolstoi,

There are two Rus’. The first, Kyiv Rus', has its roots in world culture, at least in European culture. The ideas of goodness, honour, freedom and justice were understood by this Rus' as they were understood by the entire Western world. And there is a second Rus’ - Moscow Rus’. This is the Rus’ of the taiga, Mongolian by nature, wild, beastly. This Rus’ (Russia) made bloody despotism and wild rage its national idea. This Muscovite Rus’ has long been, is and will be a total rejection of everything European and a sworn enemy of Europe’.

The task of the propagandists of that time was wilful misrepresentation and falsification of the true essence of the Ukrainian people. It is worth mentioning how the Ukrainians were portrayed in the Soviet cinematography: roles of the Ukrainians were played by some low-level actors, who did not even speak Ukrainian, but something similar to the Russian dialect. For Russians, these characters forged the image of the Ukrainians as second-rate nation. A similar pattern was applied towards Jews, Estonians, and Finns. The same anecdotes, ‘real’-life stories, and discrediting ‘facts’ about individuals of mentioned nationalities became a deep-rooted pattern for their acceptance by the Russian public. Everyone has at least once in the life encountered such cliché as ‘Zhyd’ (pejorative meaning of jew in Russian language). Often, we have heard stories about greedy and cunning Jews. As if there have never existed Russian or Ukrainian thefts or dishonest people! The point that all these negative patterns were intentionally imposed by Soviet government by means of propaganda media with further natural transfer of this fallacious knowledge to next generations.

The Russian president himself back in 2010, trying to belittle Ukraine as a former Soviet Republic, which territory and people suffered wrenching battles of the WW2, proclaimed a very significant narrative ‘Russia would have won the war even without Ukraine’, which is considered as a marker of Putin's new anti-Ukrainian rhetoric of "big brother" and attempt of imposing on Ukraine an inferiority complex. Russians even reject any idea of the role of Allies in WW2 victory. Therefore, the Soviets created their own victory day on the 9th of May, at the time when the WW2 was still going on.

Apparently, the average Russian is not capable to think critically and assesses only the said promises of the leaders. Academician Pavlov wrote: "I must express my sad view of the Russian man. He has such a weak brain system that he is incapable of perceiving reality as such. For him, there are only words that make sense. His reflexes are coordinated not with actions, but with words. The Russian mind is not attached to facts. He is more dependent on words and operates them... The Russian man is engaged in collecting words, but not in studying life".

The Russians are ready to turn a blind eye to their own poor standard of living, they are ready to tolerate sanctions, to finance newly occupied territories for the sake of the imperial ambitions of their Tzar. In fact, every dejected Russian also has invader ambitions, which they use to compensate their cowardice and incompetence. Watching the Russian media for the last eight years, their content and rhetoric, one gets the impression that there is no problem inside Russia, rather than external threat to the state - the existence of ‘Nazi’ in Ukraine and NATO around the Russian borders. Professionally edited videos, words, twisted or taken out of context, were transferred from TV screen to the brains of Russian in a ready-to-eat form. Such brainwashing approach and lack of critical thinking brings Russian society to today’s way of world order comprehension, where the whole world with some exclusions is adversary to Russia.

Therefore, no one was surprised by the gradual transition from latent to overt information aggression by Russian propaganda machine. And the desire of overpower someone lies dormant in the subconscious of Russians. That does not mean at all that this is a trait of nation of winners! This is the raging envy, that gives a birth to disgust towards everything Ukrainian, and all Ukrainian citizens and children in embroidered national shirts ‘vyshyvankas’ have already without any sober justification become fascists.

The conscious substitution of concept or the very notion of ‘Nazism’ is on the table, as only original Nazis can accuse in Nazism peaceful and democratic country in order to annihilate it. So, when this zombified by propaganda biomass becomes ready to ‘restore order’ in another state, it is ready to accept the methods and means by which this goal is to be achieved. Without declaring war, simply by attacking early in the morning the same as Hitler's Germany did (eventhough Hitler at least was able to call war a war), Russia, with the support of its own population, launched the first missile strikes on the territory of independent Ukraine and later began to carry out atrocities against civilians.

Listening to the intercepted phone call conversations between the occupants and their relatives, you can realize how they are both surprised with the standard of living and welfare of the Ukrainians, the cleanliness of the streets, the quality of clothing, the asphalt pavement and the lighting on the roads in the villages. Not a single person was ashamed to confess his acts of looting,  and their wives of girlfriends were encouraging them. Besides surprise and envy, Russians also feel disillusionment. This is not how the Putin regime pictured the Ukrainians. It turned out that Russians were living poorer. That is why the occupants, who could not take away everything they liked, simply used to destroy, and crash everything in sight: they fussiladed expensive cars, stubbed with knives LCD TV screens, defecated on the floor… According to Fyodor Dostoevsky:

‘They [Europeans] see barbarians in us, wandering around Europe and rejoicing in a possibility to destroy something and somewhere - destroy only for destruction, for pleasure to see how it all falls apart, like a horde of savages, like the Huns, ready to swoop on ancient Rome and destroy the shrine, even without any idea of what precious thing they destroy [...]’.

In the Internet the photo of the destroyed building was published with a writing in Russian on the wall ‘Who gave you permission to live beautifully?’ It is a slave's envy. They are not allowed by Tzar to live beautifully and thus Ukrainians should not be allowed to live like that. But the point is that they are not allowed to want to live better, they do not know how and do not want to learn it. It is better to have a ‘almighty country’, which threatens all around, than to spend money from the budget on people's well-being. Because since the birth Russians have been imbued with the main idea – ‘protection of the motherland’ in the first priority, while all other hardships may and must be  abided. But who being sober can attack the huge nuclear [regional] power in the XXI century? The answer is – no one. That is why Russians got accustomed to think that they are being attacked on the territory of other countries: Georgia, Moldova, Syria, Ukraine. Valentin Pikul one said that ‘The Russians have learned how to die in war. But they have never learned how to live well’.

Since ancient times, Russia has been seeking and  creating enemies to explain the poverty of the people. Today's Russia can't stop waging and freezing wars, because in peaceful Russia people may start questioning the allocations of budget. If some Russians have embraced the European mode of life, they unfortunately represent a small part of this huge country, where remote villages and towns have no gas [in the chief world gas exporter state] and Internet. And, the presence of a laptop in every other house in Kyiv region causes perplexity among the Russian troops. Why only laptops! The relatives asked soldiers to take home T-shirts, tracksuits...

Considering the troops’ composition of the military units that committed war crimes in the Kyiv region, we may conclude that this style of behaviour is not specific to one detachment of the occupying forces, rather it formes a general model of Russian behaviour, which military leadership accepts and welcomes. This is not the only generation that has a severe moral illness mentality, Russian soldiers committed similar scope of war crimes in Syria and during the two Chechen wars, but we must be sure that this is not only today’s Russian generation, which has such a severe moral illness of mentality.

The proof of aforementioned is outlined in the diary of the soviet officer Leonid Rabichev ‘War Will Write Everything Off. Memories of a liaison officer of the 31st Army. 1941-1945’, which he wrote throughout his life. There is no deep hatred of the Soviet Union in his memoirs, but at the same time there is no such excessive heroism, which is a main feature of many books about so-called 'great patriotic war'. The diary mentions a great many examples of barbarous Red Army officers, like their modern-day successors, the Russian Army ones. Rabichev recounts on the pages of his book about the plight of female soldiers (signal units’ members) at the front, when their own troops and their commanders used to rape them. Rabitchev openly speaks about the behaviour of the Red Army in the liberated Prussia, when German women and girls were raped and mutilated by Russian liberators, queuing up in long lines:

‘Those bleeding and fainting were dragged aside, children rushing to help them were shot down. Cackling, snarling, laughing, shouting, and moaning… And their commanders, their majors and colonels stand aside, some chuckling but mostly orchestrating… Forcing every soldier to participate. Total permissiveness, impunity, impersonality, and brutal logic of the maddened crowd.’

The extremely low level of moral development of the Russians has always led to the ferocity and cruelty of the Second World War. This is evidenced by the earlier quotations of prominent Russian writers, philosophers and thinkers about the Russians:

‘The Russian man has an unselfish love of meanness. He will gain nothing from it, but he will do harm to his neighbour’ (N. Gogol).

‘The drunkenness, illiteracy, stupidity, meanness and wretchedness of the Russian peasant, who has lagged behind Europe for two hundred years, and who is still not quite sure how to button his own trousers, shows once more that we cannot make friends with him, as he views friendship as a weakness’ (A. Chekhov).

‘The most important sign of good fortune of Russian people is their sadistic cruelty’ (M. Gorky).

‘How difficult it is to live in Russia, in this stinking centre of physical and moral depravity, meanness, lies and villainy’ (S. Aksakov).

‘The population of Russia has never had self-consciousness. And there is no such thing. And will not have it. And there is no need for it. The population of Russia, like Russia itself, exists solely as a lesson to the world’ (P. Chaadayev).

‘Russia is the most vile and disgusting country in the history of the world. By the method of selection there are bred monstrous moral freaks, who have the very concept of Good and Evil turned inside out. All his history this nation is floundering in shit and wants to drown the whole world in it’ (I. Illyin).

Even Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels unambiguously pointed out the very essence of Russia:

‘Russia, which has nothing to do with Rus' and which received, or rather stole, its present name in the 18th century at best, nevertheless, impudently claims the historical legacy of Rus', created eight hundred years earlier. But the history of Moscow is the history of the Horde, sewn to the history of Russia with white threads and completely falsified’ (K. Marx).

‘Any seizure of territory, any violence, any oppression that Russia has carried out with the pretext of educational enlightenment, liberalism, and the liberation of the peoples". (F. Engels).

Finally, Ukrainian historian A. Paly explains the nature of the demoralization of the Russian society by the fact that the birth of ethnicity in the central part of present-day Russia ended a few thousand years later than in most European countries. On the territory of Ukraine, stone age lasted up to 3-5 thousand years BC, and on the territory of Russia - even up to 2 thousand AD. This, in fact, explains the use of foul language of the Russian soldiers with their mothers, which is not typical to Ukrainians. It also explains the desire of the Russian public to always take the side of the despot. Muscovy, which went from feudalism to communism, and then back to feudalism again, simply could not evolve morally from the stone age. That is why the Russians are entitled to have a strong leader, because they have never known anything else in their history. We cannot consider Alexander Nevsky, Ivan Grozny, Peter I, Joseph Stalin and Vladimir Putin as persons of high moral values.

Even before 1861, up to 90% of Russians on the territory of modern Moscow were slaves, where parents could sell their children into slavery up to four times. That is why many Russian mothers don't give a damn about their sons' fate who have gone to die in a foreign country.

So, in 2022, the Russians did not show anything historically new concerning their behavior in Ukraine. Russia has only shown and confirmed its true face, which it has always tried to hide behind a veil of lies. This war proved to be useful for world history, for European countries, but at a great cost to the Ukrainian people. The world has understood that fascism is Russia.

The Ukrainian victory is ahead. The victory of good over evil. The victory of European liberal values and the rule of law over a despotic country of moral degenerates, which cannot live without war and chaos. Slava Ukraini!
